The From address of SMS messages sent via the Messaging API depends on the user's Country/Region. It may be alphanumeric or numeric, depending on the capabilities of the telecommunications system in that country. If the user has set up Premium SMS on their account, then their custom Sender ID will be used for any messages sent through the Messaging API.
